Pagano Takes Leads At EPT Deauville
Luca Pagano was the big mover on Day 4 of the Deauville leg of the European Poker Tour, emerging from the bottom half of the field to grab a big chip lead by the time the chips were bagged for the night. Thirty players departed during the day, leaving just twenty-four in contention for the €870,000 first prize.
Pagano’s upswing came largely at the expense of overnight leader Samphane Phomveha. Having doubled through with QQ against Balasz Botond, he took a big stack off the Frenchman with a full house against top trips before despatching him to the rail, all inside the first level of blinds. Pagano has enjoyed twenty EPT cashes over the years, including six final table finishes, but has yet to improve on the third position he managed in the first EPT event way back in 2004. He has picked up nearly $2 million in live tournament winnings over the years, and managed a couple of big wins in live events last year, and will surely feel that he is overdue a victory in an EPT event. Pagano finished Day 4 with just over 3.5 million chips.
The British challenge was dealt a blow with the departure of Martins Adeniya, who fell away after being the chip leader at the close of Day 2. However, Chris Brammer is still inside the top ten and, lower down the field, Rob Stain still has a very playable stack.
Pagano’s closest rivals are Olivier Rogez, who finished with an impressive 2.6 million chips, but has little live experience and Vadim Kursevich on 1.8 million, who has a little more pedigree, having come third in last year’s EPT Berlin. The field is still fairly tightly packed, with half the remaining players having more than a million chips.
Sunday will see the remaining twenty-four players reduced to a final table of eight. The top stacks ahead of Day 5 are as follows:
- Luca Pagano 3,561,000
- Olivier Rogez 2,668,000
- Vadim Kursevich 1,815,000
- Paul Guichard 1,700,000
- Andre Corredoira 1,316,000
- Ignat Liviu 1,303,000
- Christian Togsverd 1,271,000
- Chris Brammer 1,262,000
- Artem Litvinov 1,193,000
- Yorane Kerignard 1,124,000
