Adam Friedman finally triumphed in the WSOP $5,000 Seven Card Stud Hi/Lo tournament, after a gruelling final day which culminated in a three-hour heads-up with Todd Brunson. It was past five in the morning when Friedman finally overcame his opponent to capture the $269,037 first prize.

The day had started with nineteen players remaining, including some of the biggest names in the poker world. Short stacks Eli Elezra and Allen Bari were among the first to depart and they were followed by Phil Hellmuth, whose hopes of a twelfth WSOP bracelet were dashed when he was eliminated in fifteenth. The final table still contained plenty of quality with Phil Ivey, Bryn Kenney, Zimnan Ziyard and Todd Brunson joining John Monnette, who was seeking a second 2012 WSOP bracelet in a stud event.

Brian Twete was the first to leave the final table, and the big names began to fall as Kenney, Ivey and Ziyard followed him to the rail. Monnette’s challenge finally ended when he was despatched by Brunson in third place. With father Doyle in attendance at the rail, Brunson junior sought his second bracelet, and began the heads-up with a 2:1 advantage. The two battled for nearly three hours before Friedman managed to win a few back-to-back pots to wrest the advantage.

The final table payouts were as follows:

Adam Friedman $269,037

Todd Brunson $166,269

John Monnette $109,444

Nikolai Yakovenko $79,831

Sven Arntzen $59,395

Zimnan Ziyard $44,967

Phil Ivey $34,595

Bryn Kenney $27,012

Brian Twete $21,392

Viktor Blum, better known in the online world as “Isildur1” has returned to the online tables at PokerStars over the weekend and logged off $1.5 million richer. The Swede has taken his winnings for the year to $1.9 million, behind only Ilari Sahamies and Rafael Amit.

Blom took money off several big name players, including Brian Townsend and Phil Galfond. He also took a wedge off “FakeLove888” an account rumoured to belong to Patrik Antonius, as well as several other high stakes online players. Once again his game of choice was Pot Limit Omaha.

Blom won $620,000 on Saturday in a twelve-hour session, mostly at $100/$200 tables. He did even better on Sunday, amassing some $900,000.

It is the first time he has been sighted at the virtual felt for several months. Speculation over his absence has been rife on the internet, with rumours of a fall-out with PokerStars, playing on different sites and account-sharing with other players all being mooted.
